At UMOM New Day Centers, a conference room and the same table and chairs have been used for everything from new employee and program staff training to meeting space for staff, volunteers and the UMOM board. Configurations have often been less than ideal. But that’s about to change.

As the 2013 winner of Goodmans’ Eye for the Good GuyS Board Governance Award, UMOM will have much more flexibility with new furniture to create five different layouts that maximize the use of its space, capitalize on the creative energy and productivity of its team and help the nonprofit serve its clients even better.

Goodmans Interior Structures unveiled the $20,000 office makeover today when members of UMOM’s Board of Directors and staff saw the conference room for the first time since the renovation began in May.

“UMOM is thrilled to have a new conference room to allow our dedicated staff & board of directors to continue to create solutions to help homeless families. Thank you to Goodmans Interior Structures, community judges, sponsors, and supporters for making this project possible,” said Darlene Newsom, CEO of UMOM New Day Centers.

The Good GuyS award recognizes the most effective nonprofit (501c3) boards of directors, one in Maricopa and one in Pima counties.

Goodmans selected UMOM because its board of directors has been effective in strategically planning for the organization’s sustainability. UMOM has purchased adjacent property for future growth, created a succession plan for the CEO and executive team to ensure continuity, and participated in a comprehensive organizational assessment that is leading to improvements in infrastructure and business processes.

Between the Van Buren and Watkins facilities, UMOM provides emergency, extended and domestic violence shelter to approximately 150 families. UMOM also provides housing to 320 families and rental assistance to hundreds more.

In providing the $20,000 office makeover, Goodmans:

  • Created a storage room for new furniture, allowing staff to change furniture for each meeting
  • Provided new tables and chairs that can easily roll away and be stored
  • Installed a movable marker board and movable tack boards
  • Installed a projector & a screen
  • Installed UMOM’s logo on the wall and 20 large photos of families served by the organization
  • Painted with warm colors and added wood features to brighten the space

“Goodmans Interior Structures understands that nonprofits generally have limited resources and that office improvements may never find a way into the budget,” said Adam Goodman, CEO of the family-owned, Arizona-based business. “We are very proud that the Good GuyS award will assist UMOM in helping families reach their potential for years to come.”
